O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she was voted into an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd they believed that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so always top-quality that he didn't fall in the third place. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil beat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
